"The primary mission of the Codex Alimentarius is to ensure safe, good food for everyone, everywhere." This mission was accomplished by means of scientific research and investigation which then can be used to share information globally on various foods and food contaminants. For this reason the WTO recommended its food standards in the World Trade Organization Agreement on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures (SPS Agreement). Hence, "Codex Alimentarius- or the food code has become the global reference point for consumers, food producers and processors, national food control agencies and the international food trade."
The Bureau is a member of the Codex Alimentarius Commission. It serves as the ‘National Codex Contact Point (CCP), which manages a collection of Codex Standards and other FAO and WHO publications; and manages Codex activities and disseminates codex information at the national level.
