The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an independent, non-governmental membership organization which is composed of 162 member countries that are standard bodies from around the world. ISO was founded since 1946 with only 25 member countries at that time with the aim “to facilitate the international coordination and unification of industrial standards.” International Organization for Standardization has different acronyms in different languages; therefore ISO is given by the founders, derived from the Greek word isos, meaning equal. “Whatever the country, whatever the language, we are always ISO.” ISO was primarily established to develop voluntary international standards which can be applied to every aspect of trade and industry. ISO publishes over 19500 International Standards.

Popular Standards of ISO includes:

  • ISO 9000 - Quality Management,
  • ISO - 14000 - Environmental management,
  • ISO 22000 - Food Safety Management and
  • ISO 31000 - Risk Management.

The main objective for ISO International Standards is to ensure the quality, safety and efficiency of products and services.

The members of ISO are the bureaux of standards. ABBS has a connection in that it is a subscriber member of the International Organization for Standardization. As a subscriber member, ABBS receives updates on ISO’s work but cannot participate in them. Therefore having this level of access, ABBS cannot sell or adopt ISO International Standards nationally.

The Codex Alimentarius (or "Food Code") is a collection of internationally recognized standards, codes of practices, and guidelines which relates to food processes, food production and food safety. It was the result of a joint resolution of two international, non-governmental organizations: FAO and WHO in 1963. It is also known as the Joint FAO/WHO Food Standard Program. “The Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) … is the international governmental body that negotiates and adopts the standards and guidelines that are subsequently incorporated into the Codex Alimentarius.” CAC was established by the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to protect the health of consumers and ensure fair practices in food trade.

"The primary mission of the Codex Alimentarius is to ensure safe, good food for everyone, everywhere." This mission was accomplished by means of scientific research and investigation which then can be used to share information globally on various foods and food contaminants. For this reason the WTO recommended its food standards in the World Trade Organization Agreement on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures (SPS Agreement).   Hence, "Codex Alimentarius- or the food code has become the global reference point for consumers, food producers and processors, national food control agencies and the international food trade."

The Bureau is a member of the Codex Alimentarius Commission. It serves as the ‘National Codex Contact Point (CCP), which manages a collection of Codex Standards and other FAO and WHO publications; and manages Codex activities and disseminates codex information at the national level.

Various technologies covered by the Standard includes: rotating machinery, power transmission, electric cables, equipment, semiconductors, integrated circuits, fibre optics, and other such like electrotechnologies.

In 2001 IEC launched an Affiliate Country Programme that globally reaches out to developing countries. Therefore through this programme ABBS becomes an affiliate member of the International Electrotechnical Commission.
