… better standards for SUGAR

2015 - May - 18

The CARICOM Regional Organization for Standards and Quality (CROSQ) has submitted New Work Item Proposals (NWIPs) for evaluation, for the development of draft CARICOM Standards for:

  • Specification for Brown Sugar;
  • Specification for White Sugar, as well as
  • Methods of sampling and analysis of sugars

Sugar is manufactured and widely traded within the CARICOM region and is a major source of foreign exchange for some Member States. It is believed that the revision of current sugar standards, aligning them to internationally recognized standards1 would reduce barriers to the trade in sugar, that may be currently experienced in the region. As the nation’s representative to CROSQ, the Bureau is mandated to evaluate the need for development of standards that are of interest to Antigua and Barbuda.

Consumers and retailers are invited to peruse the linked NWIPs (Brown Sugar), (White Sugar) and(Sampling and Analysis of sugars) and complete the respective associated evaluation forms (Brown Sugar), (White Sugar) and(Sampling and Analysis of sugars), (required) to provide inputs for the revision of the sugar standards. Evaluation forms are to be completed and submitted by the close of business on Tuesday 26th May 2015. You must submit your comments in the appropriate format, as per the linked form, for them to be considered by the Technical Committee.

Interested stakeholders may contact the Standards Development department of the Bureau of Standards at 462-2424 or by email: abbs@antigua.gov.ag with copy to Gem.Reynolds@ab.gov.ag for additional details and instructions for providing comments, and participating in related consultations.

We look forward to your support and participation in this process.
